I am inspired by what grows out of the dirt - in the garden and in life.
When I take my camera out (a little point and shooter), I don't go looking for a painting, but treasures.
And, Oh My! I find glorious bits of wonder - glimpses of glory and hope - right there in the dirt!
I like to zoom in on the exquisite beauty growing out of the mud. I discover extravagant, intricately designed, lavishly colored leaves and petals sprouting from the ground. I am captivated by the lighting, the color combinations, the naturally flowing curves and the graphic patterns found in flowers and their surroundings. I am in awe of the miracles I see growing in my backyard.
For me, these mini miracles reveal the character of God, who created each uniquely amazing plant. I am constantly reminded that He is here, and He is good - that's my definition of hope. These contemporary floral paintings have become an expression of a discovery, a truth, an emotion, an experience - at times a sheer declaration! They are images evoking hope, joy and peace - found because Creator God has been working in the 'dirt'.
Education/Experience:
My formal education includes studying Art at Baylor University in Waco, TX, and graduating from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Art Education. I am certified to teach art K-12. I taught for close to 10 years at Kaleidoscope School of Art in Barrington, IL, where I learned exponentially from fellow artist/teachers. I have taught another 10 years in public schools in the northwest and western suburbs of Chicago. I also create and teach out of my home studio. I have been a professional artist for 30 years, creating numerous commissions - flowers, portraits of people, houses, animals, etc. I have enjoyed working with various media. (Browse my portfolio to see examples.) My work is hanging in public and private collections across the country.
Whether teaching or developing my own work, I basically love to draw, paint and dig in the dirt. I still get excited about mixing colors and watching shapes pop off the page.
